TIDBITS FROM POLAND: Sick City: The End

Double trouble

A touchstone for people's humanity: how they treat humans, particularly children vs. how they treat animals, particularly dogs.

The things a pregnant woman may hear from dog owners! ...when trying to protect herself as well as her already born kids from caresses offered by canines. These canines running around wildly without any control whatsoever. Their owners let them. Shame on them. Something else beginning with "sh" [and ending with "it(e)"] on them.

That alone – the kind of treatment dogs get vs. the attitude towards those who do not want any contact with these filthy animals – tells us more about the state of the Union... pardon, the state of Poland today than oodles of statistical data.

It was Cyprian Norwid, the greatest of writers, who said that "Poles as a nation are magnificent, Poles as society are nothing". What he meant was that we are ever ready for great public heroic acts full of pathos but what we lack is unfailing logic, perseverance and cooperation. Well, it seems that today the Polish nation (if that faithless motley cru might still be called that) became nothing as a nation. No honor, dog in the place of God, swearing, tattoos, tattoos everywhere! "March with the lout; march or die!".

Die, louts! Die! In a state of sanctifying grace, that's clear! But die nevertheless!

There is talk of war. Till it comes officially it will stay talk. The moment it does – and some people are looking forward to it (yeah, really!) – there will be at least one advantage. It will be a real pleasure (a doubtful pleasure, but pleasure nevertheless) to see all those Rexes, Rockys and Tysons eaten by their owners who – in times of hunger – would finally show and prove in practice that a human's life and safety (especially one's own) trumps an animal's.
